What do you feel the marketing department best prepared you for in your professional career?
The marketing department best prepared me for my future career by offering a wide range of classes pertaining to every aspect of marketing (advertising, sales, research, etc.). Starting up a company with so few people, these skills were a huge asset in the beginning phases of our business.
Not only did I have knowledge of the diverse field of marketing, but I also had a better understanding of what area I would be best suited in. My Eller Marketing classes didn't just educate me on the subject, but really gave a realistic idea of that particular career field and what was involved with it.
What experience(s) as a college student helped you pick the career path you are in?
There were several experiences I had as a college student that helped me pick a career in the sales field. First, involvement with several student organizations quickly made me realize how much I enjoyed meeting new people and socializing. Clearly a career that would require that I be in a cubicle or behind a desk all day was not the right fit for me. Second, the professional speakers with a career in sales always intrigued me. I really enjoyed hearing about their career path and the ups and downs of a job in sales. Last, my favorite classes were always those that involved sales and group presentations.
Any words of advice for future Eller Marketing majors?
My advice would be to take advantage of all the amazing opportunities that lie in front of you at Eller. Get involved in as many organizations as you can, meet new people and expand your social capital, and really take in all that your professors have to offer you. College goes by in a blink and before you know it you'll be working hard full-time (without those precious 3-day weekends every week!).
Can you describe a positive experience that you may have had with the faculty of the Marketing department?
I thoroughly enjoyed all of my sales classes with Vic Piscitello. Vic brought so much energy to his classroom, and he taught me so much about the sales field through his real-life experience as a sales executive. I have kept in touch with him since I graduated, and he even came to my wedding last year!
