2017 Breakfast of Champions
Sixteen teams presented final marketing campaigns on August 9 as part of the 2017 Breakfast of Champions conclusion to the Eller Summer Marketing Minor Program. Top 3 teams were announced for both cohort. Professional Judges from marketing organizations included Dave Slavin, Account Executive ZMark Promotions, Dee Anne Thomas, Sales Manager KMSB-TV/KTTU-TV, Ken Kwilosz, General Manager, AZ Lotus, Anna Fabrizio, Eller Marketing Minor 2016, Content Designer, Open Forum, Mataya VandenBerge, Eller Marketing Minor 2016, Account Executive iHEART MEDIA, and Jim Arnold, General Manager Emeritus KGUN-TV and KOLD-TV.
First Place 5 Guys for Red’s Smokehouse & Taproom
The marketing plan was to target college students, families, parties/events. Judges awarded this campaign noting their statement of goals, differentiation, use of the “smell aroma” of BBQ, their use of video tools and their idea to target visitors to the nearby hotel.

Second Place - MarCats for Client Revolve Cycling
This creative team placed second with their proposal for the new Tucson cycling club with a message of “evolve the way you feel.” Group members/majors were Matthew Joseph and Lauren Noble, Riley Bertucio Communications Matthew Markelon, Neuroscience, & Lucas Brown, Economics.
Third Place - Desert Designs Team – The Fox Theatre
The third project recognized by the judges was a campaign for Tucson Fox Theatre.
The group was commended for promotion to target a younger market with a message “For Tucson, By Tucson” reinforcing the role of the Fox in Tucson. The members were Angelo Keefe, Music, Juan Serrano, Music, Payton Wells, Communication, Morgan Spade, Creative Writing Andrea Gauthier, Literacy, Learning & Leadership.
First Place - It’s Always Sunny in Tucson –Whole Foods
Team members Carly Caylor, Spanish, Claire Stark, English, Nic DeCastro, E-Society?? Megan Lange, Journalism, Morgan Rice, Communication
The judges commended the team for their plan to target University of Arizona students with the message “You’re in college, but you don’t have to eat like it.”
Second Place - Coin Agency - The Funky Monk
Jared Maffuccio Christian Marquis Tyler McDonald, Wills Van Sickle, Communications, Logan Nasr, PPEL, Yifan Zhou, Economics. Judges indicated the team was very creative and effective in understanding the target market to develop promotions.
Third Place - Transcendent Marketing Strategies - Gentle Ben’s Brewing Company
With a long-standing connection to the University and its alumni, the third place team suggested enhanced ways to update the promotions of the restaurant. Members were Jackson Lombardo, Evan Mahoney, Communication, Thomas Kearn, Journalism, Meagan Mitsch, Psychology
The culminating event of the summer Marketing Minor program is the Breakfast of Champions. Students and faculty meet on the last day for breakfast and presentations of the final team projects. Judges from the business community are selected to view the presentations and provide insight to the students about how their work would be relevant to real world marketing applications. Read more
Instructors provide the students with hands-on experience by visiting local companies and seeing "behind the scenes."
Industry leaders and experts will visit the Marketing Minor classroom to talk about their experience in their specialized field and how marketing applies to various fields and career paths. Read More
The Eller Professional Development Center hosts a Career Immersion Day for the Marketing Minor students and to help provide the "Eller Experience." Read more
