Marketing Minor Course Substitutions

The University has rules against counting a single course for more than one major or minor on a student’s transcript. Students with a retail major or a general business minor are the most likely students to need a substitute course. If you are using ACCT 200, ECON 200 or B Ad 303 for another major or minor program, you will need to find a substitute course for either the marketing minor or for your major/minor. To make this easier for you, we will offer substitute courses in the presession for the marketing minor. If you would rather find a substitute for these courses in your other major or minor, check with the advisors for those programs.

If you are using both ECON 200 and ACCT 200 for other majors/minors, you can take MKTG 301 which includes some of the concepts from economics, accounting and statistics that are most relevant to marketing and provides experience in applying these concepts. That course is offered in presession, and you can be guaranteed a seat in that course.

If you are using B Ad 303 for other majors/minors, you can replace that requirement with MKTG 399 which is independent study. You would have to register for this course in presession which is the only term in which the MKTG 399 substitution is allowed. Dr. Nelson will supervise this course that follows the university rules for independent study. The topics can vary by student interest - some potential topics could be nonprofit marketing, direct mail, arts marketing, green (environmental) marketing, creativity, etc. The output is usually a paper or project. The topics and requirements are decided in a contract between the professor and the student. Independent study is always pass/fail with grades of S,P,C,D or E. The last three grades will count in your GPA, but the S and P grades do not. If you are taking another course during presession, it is possible to start working on your independent study before summer classes begin because the time in presession is so short. It is also possible to take an incomplete for the presession independent study and turn it in during fall semester. Independent study is not less work than a regular course - there is just more flexibility in timing of when you do things.
