Research Interests

Melanie Wallendorf is Eller Professor of Marketing in the Eller College of Management at The University of Arizona. She received an M.S. in Sociology in 1977 and a Ph.D. in Marketing in 1979, both from the University of Pittsburgh. Professor Wallendorf has published extensively on the socio-cultural aspects of consumption, including consumption as an expression of normative political ideology, the role of possessions in socially constituting social classes and ethnic groups, the meanings of favorite possessions and collections, the processes that define particular possessions as sacred or profane, and the impact of social ties on the diffusion of innovations. In 1992, she won the Association for Consumer Research Award for the Best Article in the Journal of Consumer Research. Two other articles that she co-authored were finalists for that award in other years. Her research has been featured in a number of popular press articles in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times, American Demographics, Fortune and in interviews on Voice of America and on WABC National Radio in New York. Her research has been funded by grants from the Marketing Science Institute, the Arizona Disease Control Research Commission of the State of Arizona, and the Office of Earth Science at NASA. Professor Wallendorf is currently the American Sociological Association representative to the Journal of Consumer Research Policy Board.

She Co-Chaired the 2002 Doctoral Symposium for the Association for Consumer Research. She has previously served as the Treasurer and as the Annual Conference Co-Chair for the Association of Consumer Research, and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Consumer Research. Professor Wallendorf is also an award-winning teacher for her undergraduate courses on Consumer Behavior and doctoral seminars on Marketing Theory. She received The University of Arizona's Creative Teaching Award in 1986.
