Steps

Students' educational progress will consist of the following steps:
- The Marketing Department Doctoral Studies Committee will solicit regular informal reports at the end of each semester from faculty who are in a position to comment on the student's progress through contact in courses, assistantship assignments or other means.
- The Doctoral Studies Committee will conduct a formal review of each doctoral student at the end of the studentís first summer term in the doctoral program. Special attention must be paid in this review to appraising the studentís research capability on the basis of performance in the marketing doctoral seminars that stress the development of original research proposals and in independent research assignments such as the summer research paper.
- The Doctoral Studies Committee will administer the marketing portion of the written preliminary examination. In this examination, students will be examined on specific sections of the Basic Program Elements (Marketing Management and Strategy, Marketing Theory, Consumer Behavior and Research Methods) and also the Major Program section of the Special Program Elements. Written examinations may also be required in the minor fields(s).
- The Doctoral Studies Committee, in conjunction with other designated members of the Oral Examination Committee, will administer the oral portion of the preliminary examination. This examination will concern material deemed necessary based on the written examination, plus other areas deemed to be important. The time between the written and the oral examination should not exceed that specified in the Graduate Catalog.
- The student's Dissertation Supervisory Committee will administer a dissertation proposal examination to discuss and approve the studentís proposed dissertation project and execution plans.
- The student's Dissertation Committee will conduct a review of the studentís progress at the mid-point of the dissertation project.
- The student's Dissertation Committee will administer the final oral examination upon completion of the dissertation.
