Dissertation

The doctoral dissertation is designed to indicate that the candidate is capable of conducting significant independent scholarly research. The dissertation is expected to be of such scope, independence and skillful presentation as to indicate that the student has acquired a scholarly command of the marketing area being investigated and can contribute fresh knowledge or outlook to the field.
The selection and conceptualization of the dissertation topic is an extremely important task. In order to aid this phase of the dissertation, each student is required to prepare a written dissertation proposal, which will be developed through consultation with the supervisory committee and other informed individuals. Before the dissertation proposal is formally approved by the supervisory committee, copies should be made available to all marketing faculty members and the proposal will be presented at a Marketing Research Workshop. At this seminar, which will be open to all marketing Ph.D. students and faculty members, the student will have an opportunity to explain, defend and revise the proposal as necessary.
Following approval of the dissertation proposal, the student will work on completing the doctoral dissertation under the guidance of the dissertation committee. The doctoral dissertation will be filed and defended at an oral examination as specified in the Graduate Catalog (see Appendix V).
